Week 14 - August 7th Game Summaries

The 2nd to last week or position week 1, saw some interesting developments across the league and the standing for treasured playoff seedings. Here's the recap of events as reported by the over zealous and outspoken team field correspondents of the league.

Division I

Eye Adventure clinches the #1 spot in the upper division with a narrow 7-5 victory over the 4th place Elks. The Elks play the Bandits in the final regular season game, with 3rd place on the line if they win.

Bandits, finally get the monkey off their backs, handing Copper Still a loss in a pitcher's duel, 5-2.  It was the 1st victory for the Bandits (formerly Joe & Joe) over Copper Still in 3 years.  The Bandits need to defeat the Elks this Sunday to hold onto 3rd place or have a chance for the #2 seed if Copper Still loses against Eye Adventure.  It's so nerve-racking.

TRIAD stays in the #5 spot with a no-contest win over the Mustangs. Mustangs sit as the #7 seed with the Hibs close in the rearview mirror.

Speaking of Hibernians, they drop a nail-biter to the Saloon, 19-18. The win keeps the Saloon in the hunt for the #5 spot in the division and drops the Hibs to #8.

Angels come up big against Halligan's, leaving the boys with the Halo within striking distance of the middle playoff bracket.

Notable scenario's for the playoff seedings:

  • An Elks loss and Saloon win will move the Saloon into the top playoff bracket.
  • Angels are going to need help from above to move up in the seedings.  An Angles win, coupled with an Hibernians loss, and an Eagles loss puts the Angels into the middle bracket.
  • An Eagles win, coupled with a Mustangs loss and the Eagles move into the middle bracket. Let's see what happens this Sunday.

Sparky's stepped up in a big way and put a resounding number of runs up on the board against Tri-State, leaving them squarely in the middle of the lower bracket seeding.

[Eagles soar past ODB - report submitted by the world renowned field journalist from the Eagles]: The Eagles took their year long frustration out on ODB, 31 - 15. The Birds pounded out 31 runs on 29 hits, 9 walks, and including 3 Home Runs. LF Billy Mauriello belted 2 HRs (solo, 3 Rbi) and C Phil Valenza Jr a 2 run dinger. Andy Stone (winner) and Elvis Minaya split the pitching to have the Eagles wrap up their 6th win.  The Eagles took a 8-6 lead after 3 inns, and then tacted on a 7-run 4th to go up 15-8, after 4 inns. A wild 7th inning saw ODB score 7 runs only to have the Eagles score 11 themselves, now 27-15.

Besides the 3 HRs, the Birds had 4 extra hits (NJ Jim Breunig  2 doubles, Kenny Malm double, and Mike Rodrigues triple) with the remaining team hits being singles. NJ Jim was 4-5, 5 runs, walk, 5 Rbi's; Billy M was 4-6, 3 Runs, 6 Rbi's; Phil V Jr was 4-6, 3 Runs, 7 Rbi's. 3-Hit agents were Mike Rodrigues (2 Rbi), Neil Murphy (4 Rbi), Kenny Malm (Rbi), and Brian Uhlinger (Rbi). The Birds cant forget their Outfielder Adventure-man Davin Rosenblatt who was Eagle-eyed today with 4 walks and a single, but got moved to the Infield where his sight was better.  ODB were led by Greg Kolomer, ET Micha and Joie Fimmano with their 3 hits each. And the ODB team never gave up on their play.

Division II

Panthers clinch the #1 seed in the lower division with a solid showing against the dodgers.  The Dodgers are squarely in the #5 spot for the playoffs.

Blazers take no prisoners this week against the Deadheads with a strong victory this past Sunday. Blazers are locked into the #2 seed and the Deadheads need to win to hold onto the #3 seed.

[Knights stay close to the 3rd spot - reported by the Knights never short of words field correspondent]: Knights got back in the winning column, Beating Maverick 16-8. Knight Bobby (Win) was in command. After two innings score was tied at 2.  Knights blow ahead on 9 runs in 3 to 5 innings where Mav got back 3. Bobby shut down Mav the next three innings and Knights padded 4 more runs. Knight Fish came in. Knights add one more in the 9th and then Mav got back 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to close the game. Fish hit a long 2-run Homer in the 8th and Sean McLaughlin had 5 hits And Philip Beers got 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Knights Chris Franklin was fielding star for Knights.  But fine plays on both sides.
