Week 4 (05/18) is now in the books. There were some interesting outcomes in Week 4 as the standings continue to shift. Let's see what the teams have to report.
DIVISION 1 Game Recaps
[Lynch's notches 1st W of the season, outlasting the Hibernians 10-7: PValenza reporting]: In the battle of the bottom feeders Lynches edged Hibernians 10-7. It was a well-played game by both teams with just 2 to 3 errors combined.
As for Lynches it was a pleasure to not be down 10 + runs by the second inning after playing 3 stacked strong teams in a row.
Tommy Crapanzino pitched 9 strong innings. Our top hitters were James Valenza 4 for 4 ,Mike Mc'donnell 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs +double, Joe Davino 3 for 5 +triple with an RBI, Andre Vasquez 2 for 4 RBI and David Noble 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs + HR. Also with an RBI was Phil Valenza Jr. and Davin Rosenblatt.
It was 5-4 Hiberians at end of the 3rd then Lynches bats awakened scorning 6 runs that was good enough to hold on to the lead.
DIVISION 2 Game Recaps
[Knights notch 1st W of the season, holding off the pesky Mavericks 12-8: RBodnar reporting]: On a cloudy, cool, windy morning. Knights beat Mavericks 12-6. Knightr pitcher George Siverman pitched the full game win. With a large lineup for the Knights, they started the game with 5 runs. Mav came back with 2 at the bottom of the first. Knights got 3 in 4th and 2 more in 5th with Mav 1 in 4th and 2 in 6th. Now at 10-5, Knights are at the top of the 7th. Knights tuck on two more, and Mav could only get 1 more. Very fast game. It was a very high-wind day and affected some plays. Knights hitting stars were Chris Szialny, Jim Fumnari, and John (Fish) Salmon, hitting stars with 7 Ribbies between them. With almost everyone, but 2 of 17 got one hit. Long time between wins.
New City AP 3/18/25, Angelo & Barry reporting
In an early season showdown of unbeatens, The Eagles prevailed 10-7 over the Blazers. With 10 runs, 21 hits, 43 at bats for .489, 1 walk (Hawkeye Brian Uhlinger), 3 Sac's, 1 inside the park HR by Flash Wilkey, and a miraculous catch by 'diving/let me sacrifice my body/Hell can wait' Joe Raia
Two inns propelled the Eagles, 5 runs first, 3-run 5th, as the Birds went up 9-3, while the Blazers come back 9-4, 9-6, 9-7, until the Eagles settled things 10-7
Leading the hit attack were Billy Robinson, 3-3, run; Brian Uhlinger, 2-2, run, 2 rbi, walk; Vic Grullon, 2-3; Mike Leote, 2-3, run, rbi; Chris Pellegrinelli, 2-3, run, rbi; Brian Galvin, 2-2, run
The Blazers were up against some fine pitching by Chief Eagle George. The normally powerful bats were silenced. For the Blazers, only Odin had more than 2 hits, monster triple and went 3 for 4, Rbi. Longtime pitcher, Eric, pitched masterfully and held the Eagles to 10 runs. That usually means a win! Unfortunately, not today. Richie A came out of retirement to fill in for wounded SS Arnold and did a fine job and at the plate going 2 for 4, double, Rbi. Scott and Solomon went 2 for 4, Rbi each, and Rich K went 2 for 3.
Defense Play of Gem went to the Eagles - running inward, diving, rolling, tumbling, and a left field catch, with hand raised to show glove/ball for ump to call Out, was sophomore player Joe Raia
The Birds cut down on mental errors with 4, down from last week's murderess 10
With a game ending grounder to third, 2 men on, 2 outs, and to overcome Goat Chris Pellegirnelli throw, Hero Billy Robinson saved the day with a tough 1-hop stretch to record the PO and seal the win. And, with the white of the ball showing 90%, but held steady, was a catch and hold classic picture. The Skipper was in Joy, and 'Unfinished Business' marched on.
The Eagles welcome back: Craig Vansise, with his 1st hit (3rd game) of season, a clean single; Ageless Wonder(man): George Vansise, has his pitching now at 4-0, beating 2 undefeated teams, and lowered his runs per game to 7.15
